POLICE CALLS

A summary of recent criminal activity in Girard and Liberty:

GIRARD

May 11

Attempted theft: Police received a report that someone tried to steal copper piping from a vacant home in the 100 block of North Lorain Avenue.

May 12

Theft: A woman reported her $650 iPhone stolen while visiting a residence in the 300 block of East Liberty Street.

Theft: Someone removed $500 and a backpack from a vehicle in the 700 block of Washington Avenue.

Criminal damaging: Three sections of a backyard fence were damaged in the 200 block of Church Hill Road.

May 13

Arrest: Officers responded to an erratic driver on U.S. Route 422 before charging Michael E. Bara, 57, of 225 S. Market St., Girard, with driving under the influence.

May 14

Menacing: A Mosier Road woman reported a Trumbull County sheriff informed her that the accuser’s former husband had made an implied threat against her.

Drug paraphernalia: A traffic stop near Mosier Road led to the discovery of a spoon with possible heroin residue in the vehicle’s glove compartment, though no charges had been filed at the time of the report.

Arrest: Officers took into custody 39-year-old Carl Fleeton during a traffic stop on North State Street. Fleeton, of 405 Norwood Ave., Youngstown, was wanted on a warrant from Weathersfield Township.

Assault: Authorities responded to a fight between several males on South Elruth Avenue, where a man reported having been pushed and punched. The accuser also said someone threatened him with a knife, and he had a small cut on his hand.

May 15

Animal complaint: Police were to issue a summons to a Stull Avenue woman after saying they had received numerous complaints about a barking dog at her residence.

Identity fraud: An Elruth Court woman reported a Chicago-based collection agency sent a letter stating she owes $1,030 on a credit card she never had. The woman surmised that someone had opened an account in her name.

LIBERTY

May 11

Arrest: Youngstown police handed 39-year-old Herbert Cross, 1600 Motor Inn Drive, Liberty, to township authorities. Cross was arraigned in Girard Municipal Court on the outstanding warrant.

Vehicular assault: A man alleged his former girlfriend, of Youngstown, drove toward him at high speed at a township apartment complex, apparently in an effort to strike him with her vehicle.

Arrest: Police responded to an unwanted person in the 2900 block of Oakland Avenue, where they charged 32-year-old Jarett Tarrant, 420 Granada Ave., Youngstown, with carrying a concealed weapon. Tarrant, who also was wanted on a warrant, had an 8-inch knife in a sheath on his person, a report said.

Drugs/stolen property: A traffic stop on Monticello Boulevard led to charges of receiving stolen property, carrying a concealed weapon, being a convicted felon with a firearm, improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle and marijuana possession against 29-year-old Abdul Lateef. Lateef, of 163 Seneca St., Youngstown, had a stolen and loaded 9 mm semiautomatic handgun, a bag containing 4.5 grams of suspected marijuana and a plastic bag with two pills, police said.

Arrest: Officers responded to a report of an intoxicated person in the 4200 block of Belmont Avenue, where they issued a summons to Cleavon McClendon, 37, of 474 Parkcliffe Ave., Youngstown, charging him with disorderly conduct while intoxicated. McClendon continually yelled and caused a scene, police said.

Theft/disrupting public services: Someone cut and stole about 420 feet of phone cable, interrupting service in the 300 and 400 blocks of Warner Road.

Theft: A $2,200 air-conditioning unit was removed from a residence in the 4500 block of Logan Way.

Arrest: Police in the 2700 block of Belmont Avenue picked up 53-year-old Shirley A. Korda, 2440 McCartney Road, Youngstown, who was wanted on several township warrants. Her bond was $12,500.

May 12

Drugs: A traffic stop on Belmont Avenue resulted in the arrests of Demetrius A. Lockett, 26, and Alfonso Lockett, 65, both of 4091 Glenwood Ave., Youngstown, and both of whom were wanted on warrants. The younger Lockett, wanted on a felony drug charge, faced an additional charge of obstructing official business when, police said, he provided phony Social Security numbers and dates of birth.

Theft: Lucius C. Ellis, 39, of 737 Fairgreen Ave., Youngstown, was charged with theft and tampering with evidence after $61 worth of merchandise was stolen from Dollar General in the Liberty Plaza. Ellis also ran and hid from police in a nearby store, potentially placing others in harm’s way, authorities said.

Drugs: John A. Mixon, 35, of 1527 Republic Ave., Youngstown, was charged with marijuana possession after police said they found 2 grams of suspected marijuana during a traffic stop near Colonial Drive.

May 13

Arrest: Officers responding to a fight in the 4000 block of Belmont Avenue charged 19-year-old Shaba C. Gregory, 61 E. Lucius Ave., Youngstown, with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Police had to use a stun gun when Gregory fought with them and refused to calm down, a report showed.

Theft: A 62-year-old Youngstown woman reportedly failed to return a carpet cleaner valued at more than $1,000 to Dollar General in the Liberty Plaza by the required date and time.

Drugs: A vehicle registration check on Belmont Avenue resulted in 31-year-old Billy R. Hendrix’s arrest on charges of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia after police said 1.8 grams of suspected marijuana and a digital scale were found. Hendrix, of 3504 Somerset Drive, Youngstown, also was accused of failing to appear in court.

Breaking and entering: Someone stole a 42-inch riding mower, a push mower and a snow blower from a shed at First Christian Assembly, a church at 3243 Cardinal Drive.

Arrest: Police charged 46-year-old Eugene Tensley, 1417 Himrod Ave., Youngstown, with speeding and driving under the influence after saying they clocked him driving 66 mph in a 25-mph zone in a residential area off Belmont Avenue.

Pursuit: A man led police on a brief vehicular pursuit after they attempted to pull him over on Gypsy Lane for driving without headlights.

Arrests: Police responded to suspicious activity in the 200 block of Goldie Road, where they picked up Teresa M. Whitehead, 38, and James L. Hopson, 68, both of 444 Catalina Ave., Youngstown. Whitehead and Hopson were wanted on warrants.

May 14

Theft: A man stole six cartons of cigarettes from a Speedway gas station, 4210 Belmont Ave.

Auto theft: A 2008 Jeep Patriot was stolen in the 4000 block of Madison Avenue.

May 15

Stolen property: Authorities responded to a disabled vehicle near Country Club Drive before arresting 27-year-old Alicia C. Pierce, 1034 Wick Ave., Youngstown, on felony charges of receiving stolen property and tampering with evidence and after saying a check of the Ford vehicle’s identification number revealed the car had been stolen in Boardman. Pierce also faced a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.
