New Middletown officials approve waterline contract
NEW MIDDLETOWN
Dave Sugar Excavating has been awarded a contract to replace a waterline on East Middletown Road.
The New Middletown company submitted a bid of $98,770, the lowest of nine bids. The project will install new lines on Middletown Road from state Route 170 west almost to Brungard Road. The Ohio Public Works Commission will pay 89 percent of the cost, leaving the village to pay 11 percent.
In other business at its meeting this week, village council approved purchase of a $10,673 Lazerz Tiger Cat 27 horsepower zero-turn mower with a bagger from Elder Ag & Turf Equipment Co., East Palestine. The current mower, which has needed $5,000 in repairs in the last two years, according to fiscal officer Carl Flitcraft, will be kept as a backup and for plowing sidewalks.
Police Chief Vince D’Egidio reported that the 2012 New Middletown/Springfield Memorial Day Parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. May 28 at Springfield High School and proceed to the Elementary School where a memorial service will follow at 10 a.m. Lineup will begin at 9 a.m. Anyone wanting to participate should call Sgt. In other business:
Council accepted the resignation of Patrolman Don Bova effective immediately. A part-time patrolman for seven years, Bova cited time commitments of his full-time job as the reason for his resignation.
D’Egidio announced the village was awarded a $6,771 Ohio Attorney General drug abuse prevention grant. It will be used to help pay the salary of School Resource Officer Kenneth Goist, who will provide education about prescription drug abuse as a grant requirement.
Brian Crain and Christopher Grater were approved as firefighters pending completion of physicals and background checks. The village will pay for their training in return for a two years’ commitment to village service.
Council member Virginia Younger reported village residents are urged to “paint the town purple” by displaying purple bows at their homes and workplaces starting May 25. They’re also asked to join organizers at 11 a.m. May 26 to help put up purple decorations in town for the lead up to the Relay for Life cancer fundraiser June 15 and 16 in Welker Park.
