Kings shut out Coyotes, lead 2-0

GLENDALE, ARIZ.

Jeff Carter scored three goals, Jonathan Quick stopped 24 shots and the Los Angeles Kings matched an NHL record with their seventh straight road playoff victory, beating the Phoenix Coyotes 4-0 Tuesday night to take control of Western Conference finals.

Los Angeles dominated the opener and was even better in Game 2, withstanding Phoenix’s initial push and string of penalties for a 2-0 series lead.

Dwight King scored his third goal in two games and Quick tied a team record with his third career playoff shutout to give the Kings a dominating lead heading into Game 3 Thursday night in Los Angeles.

The Kings have won nine straight road playoff games in two seasons, matching the NHL record set by the New York Islanders from 1982-83.

The Coyotes won the face off battle, 38-26, but Los Angeles had 40 shots on goal, compared to just 24 from Phoenix.

Anze Kopitar had two assists, both on Carter’s goals in the second and third period.

RANGERS-DEVILS

For the third straight series, the New York Rangers are basking in the glow of a 1-0 lead earned in the confines of “The World’s Most Famous Arena.”

The Eastern Conference’s top-seeded team has failed in its first two attempts to double that edge at Madison Square Garden. Given a third shot against the New Jersey Devils, the Rangers are determined to make the most of home-ice advantage in Game 2 of the East finals tonight.
