Where does gambling money go?

I spent 121/2 years at the Uni- versity of Nevada, Reno, and for 10 of those years I was a member of the State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers andf Surveyors.

The state’s official position was that the income from gaming went to education. The commonly held belief was that that was true and that it displaced other funds so the Legislature could play its games. I do know that my departmental budget did not indicate that the state was wealthy.

I had eight faculty and one each machinist and half-time secretary. Four of the faculty worked on externally funded research. We had two shops, one for instruction and one for universitywide service.

The year when I conceded defeat, the supplies budget was $500.
