Golf and moms linked

Hello fellow Mahoning Valley golfers. The plan is to write about a different golf topic each week: a course or a golfer for example.

But with today being Mother’s Day, here’s how golf resonates with me and others — our mothers.

For me, golf and moms are inseparable.

For as long as I can remember, I was playing golf.

And for as long as I can remember golfing, I remember my mother and grandmothers being there with me.

From dropping me off at my first junior league every Saturday morning at Mill Creek Par 3, through my competitive days at Kent State and Youngstown State, my mom was my rock.

Whether it was waking before the sun came up to drive me to a tournament, or walking the course for moral support during play, or just making sure she was there to talk to on the phone after a round in college, my mom was always there for me.

She sacrificed her time so that I could play the game I loved.

And while I’d like to think I tell her as often as I should just how thankful I am to have her as my mom, or how many memories I’ll always cherish from the times we spent together, or just how great of a mother she was in general, I’m sure I don’t.

And I’d be willing to bet I’m not alone.

I’m sure that while I sit here writing about what my mom did for me and my love of golf, there are countless others who feel the same way about their moms and the sacrifices they made and opportunities they provided in tennis, soccer, baseball, dance, football, cheerleading, basketball, hockey, swimming, bowling, softball, etc.

To my mom, and to all the moms out there ... who drove us to that tournament ... who wrote that check ... who cleaned our jerseys ... who celebrated our victories and dried our tears after defeat ...

For all the sacrifices you made to give us the chance to do what we loved ... Thank you. We love you.

And while you shouldn’t need a special holiday for us to tell you all this, please know that even though we may not say it, we still feel this way the other 364 days of the year.

As always, thanks for reading. And until next week, “Hit ’em Straight!”
