Ferrara, Condrick win Youth Masters

Youngstown Youth awards banquet is set for May 20

Staff report

AUSTINTOWN

Kyle Condrick and Brittany Ferrara were the boys and girls champs of the Youngstown Youth Masters that concluded at Wedgewood Lanes recently.

Both finals were bowled on a 43-foot sport pattern called “Dead Man’s Curve.”

Eight boys started with eight games of match play before cutting to the top four for the stepladder finals. Each match play win earned the bowler 30 bonus pins.

David Clayton won three of his eight matches and finished fourth after match play, while Andrew Letscher won six of his eight matches to finish third. Defending champion Corey Bayus won six of seven to have a 35-pin lead on Condrick, who also won six of his first seven matches.

In their final match play games, Bayus and Condrick went toe-to-toe before Condrick came out on top by five pins, and, combined with the 30 bonus pins, ended up tied for the lead with Bayus.

Forced to a 9th- and 10th-frame roll-off, Condrick won, 40-38, to take the top spot entering the stepladder stage.

Bayus averaged 201.25 for the eight match play games, Condrick averaged 197.5 and Letscher averaged 197.125.

Letscher beat Clayton, 175-165, with both bowlers struggling to find the pocket. Bayus defeated Letscher, 223-192, to advance to the championship match against Condrick.

Again, a tight game ensued before Condrick strung four strikes together to take the lead, and held off Bayus, 212-182.

Six girls started with six games of match play, with 30 bonus pins for each win. Ferrara, the qualifying leader, averaged 204 in winning four of her six matches to retain the lead heading into the stepladder final. Marissa Simon averaged 196.3 and was in second place, Katie Viglio was third and defending champion Morgan Alden was fourth.

Alden beat Viglio in the first game of stepladder play, 212-170, then Alden beat Simon, the reigning Warren Jr. Masters champion, 204-176, to advance to the championship game. With the oil pattern breaking down, Alden and Ferrara struggled, with Ferrara coming out on top, 151-133, to win the title.

Condrick and Ferrara will each receive a crystal bowling pin at the youth awards dinner on May 20.
