3 Canfield tennis players advance

CANTON

Three Canfield High tennis players have qualified for next week’s district tournament at Oberlin College.

In singles, Tony El-Hayek finished fourth in the sectional tournament while the doubles team of Will Brown and Nicholas Dibiec finished third.

On Saturday, El-Hayek fell to Lake’s Ross Whittaker (6-0, 6-2). Whittaker won the singles event, defeating Perry’s Jake Lorenz in the final. In the third-place match, El-Hayek lost to Massillon Jackson’s Nathan Gardner (6-3, 6-5).

In the semifinals, Brown-Diebiec lost to North Canton Hoover’s Tyler Sarver-Tim Bruin (6-3, 6-1). In the third-place match, Brown-Dibiec defeated Massillon Jackson’s Ben Shaheen-Ben Nelson (6-0, 7-6).

District play begins on Thursday.

Division II

BOARDMAN

Three singles players and three doubles teams from the Mahoning Valley advanced to the district tournament that will begin on Friday in Canton.

Poland’s Garrett Gardner, Salem’s Mitch Maroscher and Warren JFK’s Jad Abdul-Aal qualified as singles.

Lakeview’s Zack McDivitt-Aaron Paczac, Salem’s Jay Linam-Andre Pietrazak and Warren JFK’s Tyler Cole-John Nader qualified in doubles.

Saturday’s Division II scores were not reported to The Vindicator.

Track and field

MASSILLON

At the Federal League meet on May 11 at Jackson High, Boardman junior Giovanna Silvestri earned First Team honors in the shot put with a career best toss of 37 feet 10 Ω inches to win the event.

Silvestri also earned Second Team honors in the discus by placing second by throwing 121 foot 8 Ω inches.

Those marks qualified her to the New Balance Outdoor Scholastic Nationals in the emerging elite division.

Freshman Jordan Grantonic earned Honorable Mention honors by finishing third in the 1600, running a career-best time of 5:23.41. That qualified her to the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in the freshman mile.

At the May 5 Optimist Meet, senior Tori Moore, sophomore Emma Schwendeman, and freshmen Heaton and Regan O’Hara qualified in the nationals’ emerging elite division for their time in the 4x800 meter relay.

The Boardman girls track team placed fifth overall in the Federal League with a 3-3 dual meet record.
