YSU softball ousted from tournament

Top-seeded Valparaiso was stunned in its first game of the Horizon League softball tournament on Thursday.

The Crusaders made sure on Friday they would still be alive for the championship.

Valparaiso (39-18) defeated Youngstown State, 10-0, on Friday in an elimination game.

The Crusaders then defeated Butler 3-2 in eight innings and will play No. 2 seed Loyola today for the championship.

Despite the loss YSU ended its season with a 29-21-1 record, tying for the second-most wins in school history.

Valparaiso starter Sam MaGee pitched a two-hit shutout, allowing singles by YSU sophomore Sarah Ingalls and senior Haley Thomas.

Thomas extended her career hits record to 233 and finished her career with a .362 career batting average, which ranks second all-time.

Senior Jordan Ingalls finished her career as YSU’s all-time leading in batting average (.365) and she ranks third all-time with 228 career hits.
