Young quilters send creations to Haiti

In celebration of National Quilting Day, Canfield native Kayte Targove organized a quilting workshop at Hobby Lobby in Boardman March 17. The quilts that were created were donated to Little Children of Jesus orphanage in Haiti through the Helping Hands for Haiti program.
Attendees included several fifth-graders from St. Michael’s Church Generation of Faith program.
“The girls were very excited to make a simple quilt in a three-hour workshop. They were more excited to be able to give to children in need. You can see it in their ‘helping hands’ squares,” said Targove.
“National Quilting Day was started to celebrate fabulous quilts and those who make them. This is the first year of celebrating National Quilt Day with Helping Hands for Haiti. I chose Haiti because I am a member of St. Michael’s and we are affiliated with Little Children of Jesus orphanage,” Targove explained.
Targove is a Canfield High School graduate and has been sewing since she was 9.
“I have quite a collection of fabric, mostly children’s prints and I was thinking of a way to get the best use of this fabric. I cut the 10-inch squares and the girls picked out the placement and design. They stitched the squares and added a polyester batting and a fabric for the backing. We have made about 15 quilts so far. I hope to have a workshop to make more quilts this summer,” Targove said.
