Canfield’s El-Hayek, Brown and Debiec advance in boys tennis

Three Canfield boys tennis players have qualified for next week’s district tournament.

Tony El-Hayek in singles, and doubles partners Will Brown and Nicholas Debiec reached the semifinals in the Division I sectional tournament on Thursday.

El-Hayek defeated Jashua Duerr of Lake, 6-4, 6-4, and will play Ross Whittaker of Lake in a semifinal match on Saturday.

Brown and Debiec defeated Lake’s Clay Schnars and Justin Maranville, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, on Thursday. They will play Tyler Sarver and Tim Bruin of Hoover in the semifinals.

Boardman’s Julian Testa and Brian Hirschl and Canfield’s Ryan Kaleel and Ryan Yankush lost doubles matches in the quarterfinals.

ORWELL

Maplewood swept the Northeastern Athletic Conference track and field championships on Wednesday.

The Rockets’ boys team scored 176 points, edging runner-up Pymatuning Valley (144).

Maplewood’s girls scored 130 points, topping Py Valley with 118.

Wyatt Hartman and Tuan Hong of Maplewood’s boys each won three events. Hartman won the 1600 meters (4:40.8), 800 (2:03.9) and 3200 (10:23.3), and was on the winning 4x800 relay. Hoang won the 100 (11.3), 400 (51.5, a meet record) and 200 (22.8), and was on the winning 4x200 relay. Solomon Yoder won the 300 hurdles (40.3, a meet record) and Stephen Pop won the discus (147-10). Maplewood also won the 4x400 relay.

Badger’s Kenny Bolyard won the shot put (44-31/2).

For the Maplewood girls, Erin Pavick won the 1600 (5:49.6) and 800 (2:32.8) and was on the winning 4x800 relay. LeAnn Penn was on the 4x800 relay and won the 3200 (12:31.6). Also, Rebecca Shelton won the shot put (32-9).

Jennilyn Krumpe of Badger won the 100 (13.1), 400 (59.7, a meet record) and 200 (27.0), and teammate Sarah Bonar won the discus (97-1 a meet record).

Lordstown’s Sarah Cash won the high jump (5-0) and was on the winning 4x400 relay (4:23.9). Lordstown also won the 4x200 relay (1:56.0).
