Voters to cast ballots in Aug. 7 special election
Voters in the village of Newton Falls and the Columbiana school district will be able to cast ballots on issues in the Aug. 7 special election.
Newton Falls has a new tax issue and a charter amendment expanding the park and recreation board, and Columbiana schools has a bond issue on the ballot.
No other government or school entity in the Mahoning Valley has any issues to be considered by voters on the Aug. 7 special election ballot.
The Columbiana school district originally had a 5.84-mill, 10-year additional tax levy up for a vote on Aug. 7 to raise $1 million annually.
But the levy was pulled Wednesday, the filing deadline for issues on the August ballot, because the district’s financial outlook improved.
But the district will still ask voters to approve a 1.237-mill, 29-year bond issue to raise $4 million for improvements to the South Side Middle School and its grounds.
While there are no issues on the Aug. 7 ballot in Mahoning County, registered voters in Beaver Township Precinct 4 and Springfield Township Precinct 3 can vote on the Columbiana school issue.
Students in those precincts attend school in the Columbiana village school system.
Newton Falls is seeking a 3.5-mill, 5-year additional tax levy for police services to raise $210,167 a year.
A reduction in revenue led to the village council recently asking the city manager to open negotiations with the Trumbull County emergency 911 center to have Newton Falls join. The village currently has its own dispatching system.
Also, voters in Newton Falls will be able to vote on a charter amendment that expands the park and recreation board from two members to five.
