Summer youth program offers jobs

Staff report

WARREN

About 250 Trumbull County youths age 15 to 24 will have an opportunity to earn up to $1,848 this summer in a youth program through the Department of Job and Family Services.

The program provides jobs to youths who qualify and will run for about 10 weeks starting June 11. Each youth works about 30 hours per week. Applications can be filled out at the JFS offices, 280 North Park Ave.

This year’s program is for $560,000, which is less than the $1 million the last time funding was provided for the program, but more than last year, when there was none, said John Gargano, interim JFS director.

“It’s great news for our area,” Gargano said, adding that the jobs help teach responsibility and a work ethic. The work frequently involves maintenance activities at schools or parks.

“Because of our economy and lack of work, [young people] are competing against dislocated workers, but this is just for the youths,” Gargano said.

Youths must apply in person and be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian if under age 18. Those 18 and older not attending school must be a custodial or non-custodial parent.

The following documentation must be presented at the time of application: Social Security card, driver’s license or state ID, birth certificate or proof of age, proof of residence (such as rent receipt, letter or bill), proof of total gross household income for the past 30 days (pay stubs, food stamps, unemployment, Social Security printout of all household members) and proof of school attendance.

Applications will be accepted the following dates: 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, 9 a.m. to noon May 19, 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. May 23, 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. May 30, and 9 a.m. to noon June 2.
