Mahoning commissioners will vacate Springfield Township roads
NEW SPRINGFIELD — Mahoning County commissioners are expected to vacate Donaldson Road and a portion of Rapp Road next week, the final chapter in a long-standing Springfield Township dispute with a mining company.
The action is set for a commissioners’ meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday at Springfield Local High School auditorium, Springfield Township trustees announced at their meeting Wednesday.
Trustees voted 2-1 Jan. 30 to accept a $2 million settlement from Essroc in lieu of road reconstruction in the area which was the site of years of strip mining.
While some residents wanted the road restored, an engineer told trustees months ago that strip mining has left the area in a condition which makes this impossible. The original agreement on the road was with Carbon Limestone, which later sold mining rights to Essroc.
