LPGA legend Sorenstam to visit YSU

Women’s professional golf legend Annika Sorenstam will meet with members of the Youngstown State University golf team while she is in the Mahoning Valley.
Sorenstam is the featured speaker at the 20th annual Athena Awards dinner May 24.
Team members, including coach Roseann Schwartz, will attend the dinner, which begins at 5:30 p.m. at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center in Boardman. Sorenstam will meet with the women’s team members after the dinner.
Area high-school golf-team members also have been invited to the dinner to hear Sorenstam.
During her 15-year Hall of Fame career, Sorenstam rewrote the LPGA and Ladies European Tour record books and won countless awards. She amassed 89 worldwide professional victories, including 72 LPGA wins, 10 of which are major championships.
Sorenstam’s husband, Mike McGee, is an East Palestine native. The couple have two children.
During the dinner, 25 area women who were nominated for the Athena award will be honored, and the 2012 Athena Award winner announced. The event is presented by the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber and The Vindicator.
