Bike to Work event

WARREN

A city councilman and county health-department official are organizing the Bike to Work Warren Breakfast from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. May 18 at the Log Cabin on Mahoning Avenue on Courthouse Square.

The event will feature free T-shirts to the first 20 people and free breakfast for all, said Councilman John Brown, one of the organizers.

Brown and Mel Milliron, an education specialist with the Trumbull County Health Department, are having the event to encourage people to be more physically active and bike to work to promote Warren as a bicycle-friendly community, Brown said.

Replacement needed

YOUNGSTOWN

The city’s Civil Service Commission decided to replace Jennifer J. Lewis as its administrator as quickly as possible.

Lewis is resigning, effective May 18, for a job at Youngstown State University.

The commission, which met Wednesday, decided to select Lewis’ replacement by having candidates submit resumes detailing their qualifications and experience rather than having them take a written test.

The three commission members and Mayor Charles Sammarone will conduct interviews with qualified candidates.

The mayor is the appointing authority for the job, said city Deputy Law Director Anthony Donofrio.

Rates to increase

CAMPBELL

Rates for water users in Campbell will go up 5 percent beginning with the May bills, said Campbell Administrator Jack Dill.

The increase, which is the first in three years, is needed because of a rise in the cost of chemicals, Dill said Thursday.

GOP breakfast

The Trumbull County Republican Party will have its monthly breakfast meeting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the community room at Eastwood Mall near the Republican Party headquarters and Dillard’s.

Guest speaker will be Nathan Martin, speaking about the Health Care Compact that is before the Ohio General Assembly.

The Young Republicans will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the party headquarters. Anyone age 40 and under is invited to attend, including high-school and college students. Speaker will be Nancy Arthur, Republican candidate for Ohio Senate 32nd District.

Safe driving day

CHAMPION

Safe People Equal Excellent Drivers, organized by the Ohio State Highway Patrol and Trumbull County Safe Communities Coalition, will have a free educational day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Kent State University at Trumbull, 4314 Mahoning Ave. NW.

Presentations on safe summer driving will be given by Motorcycle Ohio, American Automobile Association, Mecca Township Fire Department and the OSHP. Refreshments will be served by Boy Scouts of America.

Boardman Township trustees canceled Wednesday’s special meeting and rescheduled it for 4 p.m. today in the Boardman Township Meeting Room, 8299 Market St. They will adjourn into executive session to discuss collective bargaining.
