Canfield, Boardman teams advance

CANTON

Two doubles teams from Canfield and one from Boardman have advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division I sectional tennis tournament.

In singles, Canfield’s Tony El-Hayek won three matches to reach the quarterfinals.

In doubles, Cardinals Will Brown and Nicholas Debiec defeated teams from Akron Ellet (6-0, 6-0) and Massillon Perry (6-1, 6-0). They next will play Uniontown Lake’s Clay Schnars and Justin Maranville.

Canfield’s other team — Ryan Kaleel and Ryan Yankush — defeated Canton GlenOak (6-0, 6-1), Alliance (6-0, 6-1) and Massillon Perry (2-6, 6-2, 6-1). They next will play Massillon Jackson’s Ben Shaheen and Ben Jackson.

Boardman’s Julian Testa and Brian Hirschl posted wins against Canton McKinley (6-0, 6-1), Barberton (6-0, 6-0) and Wassillon (6-1, 6-2).

Boardman’s other team — Joe Testa and Nate Higgins earned a victory over Canton Timken (6-0, 6-0) before being ousted by Green’s Tyler Fehr and Adam Jasso.

In singles, the fourth-seeded El-Hayek defeated Louisville’s Anthony Hoover (6-0, 6-2), Massillon’s Andrew Eslich (6-0, 6-0) and Marietta’s Wes Kline (6-2, 6-2). His next opponent will be Lake’s Joshua Duerr.

Another Canfield player, Jared Hofsess won twice, ousting Massillon Perry’s Matt Kilmer (6-2, 6-0) and Garrettsville’s Payne Vue (6-0, 6-1). His next match will be against Massillon Jackson’s Nathan Gardner, the second seed.

Division II

Mitch Maroscher of Salem, a state qualifier in Division II, will start today’s sectional at Boardman High School at 8:15 a.m. with a first-round bye as the singles tournament’s No. 1 seed.

Poland’s Garrett Gardner, a 2011 state qualifier on a doubles team with Kenry Duncan, is going the singles route, this year.

The Division II doubles sectional takes place at the Volney Rogers courts at 8:30 a.m.

Zach McDivitt and Aaron Paczak of Lakeview qualified to districts as a doubles team, last year, and are the No. 1 seed in this year. Tyler Cole and John Nader — both sophomores from Warren JFK — are the No. 2 seed. Ryan Calcagni and David Shoffstall of Poland are the No. 3 seed.
