US hikers held in Iran marry in Calif.

SAN FRANCISCO

Two Americans who were detained and accused of spying after hiking near the Iraq-Iran border three years ago have been married in Northern California.

San Francisco attorney and family friend Ben Rosenfeld says Shane Bauer and Sarah Shourd were married at 4 p.m. Saturday at an undisclosed location.

Rosenfeld declined to provide details of the wedding, but says about 200 people attended. He would not say where the couple was honeymooning.

Bauer, Shourd and Josh Fattal, all University of California, Berkeley graduates, were arrested on July 31, 2009, and held in Iran.

Bauer and Fattal were sentenced to eight years after being convicted on spy-related charges, but were released after more than two years. Shourd was released after 14 months on bail.

All three say they were innocent of spying and had simply strayed across the countries’ border while in the mountainous region.

Afghan soldier fires on troops, kills 1

KABUL, Afghanistan

An Afghan soldier killed one U.S. marine and wounded another before being shot to death in return fire Sunday in southern Afghanistan, the latest in a series of attacks against foreigners blamed on government forces within their own ranks.

Nearly 20 such attacks this year have raised the level of mistrust between the U.S.-led coalition and their Afghan partners as NATO gears up to hand over security to local forces ahead of a 2014 deadline for the withdrawal of combat troops.

Paul wins delegates from Maine GOP

AUGUSTA, Maine

With Mitt Romney’s GOP presidential nomination all but decided, Ron Paul supporters took control of the Maine Republican Convention and elected a majority slate supporting the Texas congressman to the GOP national convention, party officials said. The results gave the Texas congressman a late state victory.

In votes leading to the close of the two-day Maine convention, Paul supporters were elected to 21 of the 24 delegate spots from Maine to the GOP national convention in Tampa, Fla. The 24th delegate’s seat goes to party Chairman Charles Webster, who has remained uncommitted throughout the process.
