Members of the Howland American Legion Riders Chapter 700 will be on two wheels, riding to send the children of fallen veterans to college and they want support from the community.

The group will assemble at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Starbucks on state Route 46. Participants will leave at noon on a 100-mile round-trip ride to raise money for the Legacy Scholarship Fund, a fund established by the American Legion to send the children of fallen veterans to college at little or no cost.

Participants must donate $10 per rider and $5 per passenger to participate.

Jim Campbell, chapter director, said weather will not be a factor. He said the chapter is dedicated to raising as much money as possible for the fund.

“We are running rain or shine because looking at what our veterans have endured, a little rain is nothing,” he said. “People can come out in a car if they want to, we don’t care. .”

The Legacy Scholarship Fund was established in 2001 to recognize the educational needs of children who have parents who have gone off to war or been killed in action. There is an Annual National Legacy Run to raise money for the cause. Funds raised at the Howland motorcycle run will go toward the national fund.

The National Legacy Run will be Aug. 21 starting in Niagara Falls, running through Ohio and Michigan, and ending in Indianapolis Campbell said the national ride collected $380,000 in 2011. The total collected for the scholarship fund in 2011 was $760,000 including corporate donations.
