Renewal hearing set for Ohio nuke plant

PORT CLINTON, Ohio

Federal regulators are set to consider whether to renew the license of a northern Ohio nuclear plant for another 20 years.

The federal Atomic Safety and Licensing Board will have a hearing in Port Clinton on May 18 to weigh the license renewal for the Davis-Besse nuclear power plant.

The Blade newspaper in Toledo reports that several anti-nuclear groups are opposing the request.

The opponents say they think the nuclear plant near Toledo is unsafe and are pointing to small cracks found last year in a concrete shell that protects the reactor.

The plant’s operator says it traces back to a 1978 blizzard when wind, rain and a drastic temperature drop caused moisture to penetrate the concrete.
