Carmelita Douglas, interim executive director of the Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority, told Mahoning County commissioners that construction is proceeding on Phase One of the Village at Arlington, which will replace the demolished Westlake Terrace buildings. The first occupants are expected to move into the new development in October.

Five people became U.S. citizens in a Thursday naturalization ceremony conducted by Judge Beth A. Smith of Mahoning County Domestic Relations Court. Their names, hometowns and countries of origin are: Hania Adnan Qutail, Boardman, Jordan; Said Suliman Said Ismail, Liberty, Palestine; Emad Shawky Baky, Canfield, Egypt; Tamam Mohd Fayeq Serhan, Boardman, Jordan; Giuseppe Cincinnato, Canfield, Italy.
Pruning workshop
CANFIELD
A hands-on workshop on pruning trees and shrubs will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Canfield Fairgrounds. The event was postponed two weeks ago due to a forecast for inclement weather. The Ohio State University Extension Office here will teach participants how to prune for maximum flower potential and visual attractiveness and to minimize disease. Participants are advised to bring a folding chair and meet the group at the fair board administration office near the grandstand. Space still is available. The fee is $20, which includes a set of hand pruners or folding pruning saw. Call 330-533-5538 during business hours to make a reservation.
Woman injured after her car hits utility pole

A woman was thrown from her car after it hit a utility pole on state Route 168 Friday morning, Pennsylvania State Police said.
Sierra R. Duncan, 26, of New Castle was flown to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown after the 7 a.m. accident.
She had a head injury, police said. The hospital would not give information on her condition Friday.
After she struck the pole, her car hit another car driven by Glenn W. Floyd, 20, of New Castle. He was not injured.

Michael J. and Karen A. Popovec of Canfield won $593,900 after matching all five numbers drawn in the Thursday’s Rolling Cash 5 game of theOhio Lottery. After mandatory federal and state taxes are withheld, the Popovecs will get $409,170.
They purchased the five-of-five winning ticket from X-Press Stop Center, 7100 Lockwood Blvd., Boardman. They used auto pick. The winning numbers were 2-7-22-29-33. X-Press Stop Center receives a $500 agent bonus for selling a five-of-five winning Rolling Cash 5 ticket.
State prison honors officer, employee

Sy Smallwood has been chosen corrections officer of the year, and Beverly Righetti is employee of the year at the Trumbull Correctional Institution.
“Sy and Beverly both exhibit the department’s core values of integrity, leadership, excellence and accountability,” Warden Benny Kelly said. “They are true professionals.”
Smallwood will compete with other statewide corrections officers of the year to receive the Ronald C. Marshall Award as corrections officer of the year for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections.
