The Saturday appearance by Stephen G. Post, Ph.D., author of “The Hidden Gifts of Helping: How the Power of Giving, Compassion and Hope Can Help Get Us Through Hard Times,” at Park Vista Retirement Community, 1216 Fifth Ave., has been canceled, Park Vista officials said Thursday. Those who registered to attend will be issued a refund.

Fire loss is $80K

Firefighters say the cause of a garage fire likely will remain undetermined because the structure was burned so badly.

Members of the Eagle Joint Fire District were called to 1906 Mahoning Road about 5:15 p.m. Wednesday and had the flames out shortly after 7 p.m. The estimated damage from the homeowner was about $80,000 because of the property, including a watercraft, in the garage, firefighters said. One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion, but no other injuries were reported.

Cycle ride begins

POLAND

Chuck Campbell of Poland began his bicycle ride in memory of his late wife, Carol Campbell, on Thursday morning in front of Ntense Workout. He was surrounded by family and friends and was blessed before beginning his ride. He is expected to end today’s ride in the Canton area. His final destination will be Pensacola, Fla.

Shoe drive set

WARREN

A Soles 4 Souls shoe drive will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 12 at Mollenkopf Stadium at Warren G. Harding High School, 860 Elm Road NE. Students will collect new and slightly used shoes that will be donated to Soles 4 Souls, a nonprofit organization in Nashville, Tenn. Soles 4 Souls will distribute the items to needy adults and children in the United States and 120 other countries.

Robbery probed

BOARDMAN

Police are investigating a robbery at the Shell gas station, 950 Boardman-Poland Road.

A Shell manager told police a man walked into the store about 10:20 p.m. Wednesday, placed several items on the counter to pay and then asked for six cartons of cigarettes.

As the manager was placing the cartons into bags, the man reached over the counter and took the bags filled with more than $300 worth of cigarettes. The suspect is described as a black male between age of 45 and 50, who is taller than 6 feet and weighs between 275 and 300 pounds. He has black and gray, braided shoulder-length hair and was wearing red plaid pajama pants, reports state.
