Thursday temp broke record

Though the Mahoning Valley won’t see another record high as it did Thursday anytime soon, the temperature will be higher than normal through Tuesday.

The area reached a record high Thursday for May 3 with the temperature reaching 87 degrees at 1:57 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. It takes the readings at the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport in Vienna.

The previous record for May 3 was 86 degrees in 1942.

There won’t be any challenges to other records for the next few days, but it will be warmer than average today to Tuesday, said Martin Thompson, a hydrometeorological technician with the National Weather Service in Cleveland.

It should be close to 80 degrees today. The record for May 4 is 88 degrees in 1949.

The temperature should reach the upper 70s Saturday and the mid-70s Sunday and Monday, according to the NWS forecast.

The high for Tuesday is expected to be 70 degrees.

For this time of the year, the average high temperature is 66 to 67 degrees, according to NWS statistics.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely today.

Saturday and Sunday are expected to be cloudy, but no rain is in the forecast for either day.

There’s a 50-percent chance for showers Monday. There’s no rain in the forecast for Tuesday.
