Dobbins second-graders in Karen DeVito’s class celebrated their favorite grandmas and grandpas during a grandparent’s day celebration on April 20.

During the event, the second-graders shared some of the favorite poetry they have studied, including some they created themselves.

The students began with a grandma and grandpa poem that ended with a word from each second-grader to describe their relative. Words that appeared often were loving, supportive, great, awesome, sweet and smiling. Small groups shared a selection of poems from Shel Silverstein before presenting some of their own poetry to the crowd.

DeVito explained some of the poetry styles the kids explored. Color poems had the students explore every color in the rainbow through items and emotions that are associated with each shade.

Shape poems included a drawing with simple words to describe it. A drawing of a thundercloud was accompanied by the poem “cloud, cloud, cloud, bolt, bolt, bolt.”

The students also shared limericks, acrostic poems, biography poems and poem skits that often told a funny story.

“I’m so proud of what the students wrote and I’m thrilled that they performed for you. Throughout the year, I’ve seen the students grow so much and speaking in front of a group like this is a very big deal. They did a wonderful job,” DeVito told the audience.

Following the performance, students brought a personalized poem to their grandparents and then enjoyed cookies and juice provided by the school’s PTO.
