Program to offer summer jobs to low- and moderate-income youths

YOUNGSTOWN

A summer employment program for young people from low- and moderate-income families will be available this year, said Robert E. Bush Jr., director of the Mahoning County Department of Job and Family Services.

Bush announced the program, which will employ between 90 and 100 people between age 14 and 24, at Thursday’s meeting of the Mahoning County commissioners.

The county JFS received a $680,000 Ohio JFS grant for the program, from which it can reimburse government entities for up to $10 an hour for youth employment between June 1 and Aug. 31.

JFS is sending letters to officials of Youngstown, Campbell and Struthers, the Youngstown school board and Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority, Bush said.

Among the tasks the young workers can perform will be grass-cutting and classroom cleaning.

“Generally, if someone in your household is on any type of [public] assistance, and you’re 14 to 24, you probably qualify,” he said.
