Discuss books on communication

Book Discussion Group sponsored by the Friends of PLYMC and facilitated by Greg Smith, will meet on May 8 and 15 from 8 to 9 a.m. The discussion will feature John C. Maxwell’s “Everyone Communicates, Few Connect.”

The author takes readers through the Five Connecting Principles and the Five Connecting Practices of top-notch achievers.

Blood drive set

The Poland library will host a blood drive sponsored by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross on May 22 from 12 to 6 p.m. The blood drive is a special blood drive for people with Type O.

Trim a tree at the library

The Poland library invites children of all ages to decorate an ornament for the all-seasons tree during library hours, through the month of May.

Create a sky craft

The Poland library invites school age children to make art on a string to swing from the sky above the librarians desk. Children create the crafts during library hours, through the month of May.

Pajama Jam set

The Poland library will host Pajama Jam: Sleepy-Time Fun for the Family on May 21 from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Put on your pajamas and bring out the whole family for stories and more fun.

Lego My Library

The Poland library invites children 6 and older to create Lego designs on May 15 from 6 to 7 p.m. Legos will be provided.

Fun Time for 4s and 5s

The Poland library will host Fun Time for 4s and 5s on May 10, 17, 24 and 31 at 1 p.m. The program will include developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help children, ages 4-5, become successful readers. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The Poland library will hosts Baby Brilliant: Tales and Talk for 2s and 3s on May 10, 17, 24 and 31 at 10:30 a.m. The program will include developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help children, ages 2-3, become successful readers. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The Poland library will host Baby Brilliant: Bonding with Babies and Books for babies 6-23 months on May 9, 16, 23 and 30 at 10 a.m. The program will include developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help children become successful readers. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Wildflower hike set at Poland Forest tomorrow

The Friends of the Poland Forest Spring Wildflower Appreciation hike will take place tomorrow at 9 a.m. Meet at the College Street entrance to the Poland Municipal Forest.

The hike will last approximately one hour and will be at a slow to moderate pace. All are welcome.

Poland church hosts presentation on fracking

PopOvers, a regular fellowship and learning time presented by Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, is hosting guest speaker Stuart Smith, a hydrogeologist working in water supply, on May 8.

The topic of the presentation is the oil and gas boom, including hydrofracturing or ‘fracking,’ shale gas, big rigs, injection wells and “subterranean sludge.”

It will cover both the promise and the risks of the new large shale oil and gas development.

Anyone interested may attend. Lunch starts at noon. A donation is requested, but interested people can come for the talk and the fellowship.

Clothing pantry set for today

A Clothing Pantry will take place today from 10 a.m. to noon at West Side Community Center.

The pantry will include free clothing for men, women and children. West Side Community Center is located at 304 Matta Ave.

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed May 13, 27 and 28.

ABWA meeting set Tuesday

The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will hold a meeting on Tuesday at The Stonebridge Grill and Tavern on Route 224 in Boardman. Networking will be from 6-6:30 p.m. and dinner will follow. The cost is $16.50 and will include chicken, potato, vegetables and brown dessert. On the agenda for the meeting is voting for new officers for the 2012-2013 year and reports on the Chinese auction fundraiser.

Dairy Queen hosts kids cake decorating

The Cornersburg and Austintown Dairy Queens will host Kids Cake Decorating for Mom on Saturday. The Cornersburg location, 3555 S. Meridian Road, will host the event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the Austintown location, 146 N. Canfield-Niles Road, will be hosting it from 1 to 4 p.m. A qualified DQ cake decorator will be on hand to assist. Kids can create their own design, add sprinkles, gel, icing and candy or place an edible image of their choice on the cake. This is an open house event. It only takes about 15 minutes to decorate a cake. Call to reserve a spot so the appropriate amount of decorators are available to assist children. Children must be supervised by an adult.

Regional Chamber luncheon set

Cleveland Browns head coach Pat Schurmur will headline a Regional Chamber executive luncheon titled “Football Friday with the Cleveland Browns” on May 18 at the Maronite Center, 1555 S. Meridian Road. Registration, networking and lunch begin at 11:15 a.m., with the program starting at noon.

Schurmur will talk about plans for the 2012-2013 season and be available to field questions about the team, including his take on how the Browns did in the 2012 NFL Draft.

Current and alumni players will be on hand at the luncheon as well as the voice of the Browns, Jim Donovan.

This event is open to Chamber members and nonmembers. Cost is $25 and includes the program, lunch and a Browns souvenir as well as give-a-ways throughout the program.

Baby bargain boutique set

Boardman Park will be hosting its annual Baby Bargain Boutique on May 19 from 9 a.m. to noon at Masters Pavilion. Admission is free. The Fifth Sparrow Ministry is hosting a Murder Mystery Mayhem at Myrddin Winery on May 25 at 7 p.m. The cost is $22 per person. The cost includes dinner and a glass of wine.

Baskin-Robbins offers 31-cent ice cream

Baskin-Robbins ice cream stores throughout the Valley will host a 31-cent Scoop Night May 2 from 5-9 p.m. All guests receive a single scoop serving for 31 cents. There is a limit of one per guest.

Many locations will have additional offers available and will take pre-orders on cakes for Mother’s Day, Graduation and Father’s Day.

Select locations will feature “Celebrity Scoopers” who will surprise fans by serving ice cream during a portion of the evening. Local firefighters will be on hand at many locations with their collection boots to help raise funds and awareness for their burn unit charities.

Cindy, owner of Cindy’s Health and Vitality in Warren, will be the guest speaker at The Mahoning Valley Fibromyalgia Support Group’s May 16 meeting at 7 p.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church, 425 Crestview Dr. in Boardman. Anyone with an interest in this topic may attend.

Murder Mystery dinner needs suspects

The Myrddin Winery in Lake Milton will host a Murder Mystery dinner May 25 at 7 p.m. and is searching for people to participate in the show.

Wound Care center relocates

The St. Elizabeth Boardman Wound Care Center has moved to 7010 South Ave., Suite 6 in Boardman. The new office, at the corner of South Avenue and Trailwood Drive, opened this morning and is convenient toRoute 224 and Interstate 680, providing easier access for patients than its former DeBartolo Place office.

St. Elizabeth Wound Care Center specializes in providing comprehensive care for chronic, non-healing wounds using the latest treatments and technologies. Treatment is tailored to each patient’s unique needs and requirements, and complements the care provided by the patient’s primary care physician.

Eat pasta, support Tyler

A pasta dinner in support of Tyler Branca will be held on May 20 from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at St. Charles Catholic Church, 7345 Westview Drive. The cost is $9 for adults and $6 for children 10 and under. Dinner includes pasta, meatballs, salad, roll, dessert, coffee, tea and orange drink. Pasta, sauce and meatballs are donated by Cafe Capri.

Branca is a 21-year-old college student who was recently diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. Monetary donations are also accepted at any First National Bank — just ask for the Tyler Branca Fund.

Registration opens for Women’s Heart Day

Registration for Woman’s Heart Day, a free health and wellness extravaganza provided by Humility of Mary Health Partners has begun. Provided as a service to the community, Woman’s Heart Day will take place on May 10 from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Covelli Centre. This annual event features free health screenings, fitness demonstrations, educational presentations on a variety of women’s health issues, cooking demonstrations, refreshments and giveaways.

Among the health screenings offered this year are bone density, lipid panel (cholesterol) and glucose testing, arterial disease assessments, blood pressure readings, vision screenings, body fat measurements and health age assessments.

Registration is required and appointments for lipid panel testing are limited.

Italian Fest to be in August

The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest will be held on Aug. 3-5 in downtown Youngstown. The festival is now accepting applications for the Italian Man and Woman of the Year. Applications for scholarships are also available. Applicants must be attending Youngstown State University in order to be eligible for these scholarships. Deadline for applications is June 1. Car Trunk and Treasure Sale set

The Ursuline Center Car Trunk and Treasure Sale will be July 14 at 9 a.m. in the parking lot of the Ursuline Center on Shields Road in Canfield. Spaces are now available for cars. The cost for a side-by-side space is $25, but the fee will increase to $30 after June 30. All spaces are first-come, first-served.

The sale will also include food and refreshments on sale as well as a book, bake and furniture sale that be will held inside the center. The sale of pets, firearms and fireworks will not be permitted.

Participate in Ohio Plant Lover’s Tour

The MetroParks is traveling to Ohio Prairie Nursery on May 30 to see native plants best suited for Ohio. The bus will continue on to the American Herb Society and Holden Arboretum for lunch and a tour. The David G. Leach Research Station displaying spectacular rhododendrons is the last stop before a delicious dinner at the Ferrante Winery and Ristorante. Cost is $135 ($95 for FFRG members). Poland raffle raises equipment funds

The Poland concert bands and Jazz Ensemble are in need of updated equipment and sound system. To defray the cost, the band is sponsoring raffle fundraiser.

Each band member in grades seven through 12 will sell at least five raffle tickets. The proceeds will be used to purchase updated equipment for the bands. The cost of each ticket is $20 and will be entered into a weekly drawing. Weekly drawings for $100 will be held, with a $200 drawing on May 2 and a $500 drawing on May 16.
