Boys track squad earns Federal League win
The Boardman boys track team improved its Federal League record to 3-0, and its overall record to 18-0 with a 96.5-40.5 victory over the Lake Blue Streaks.
The Spartans opened the meet with a victory by sophomores Alan Burns, Justin Maroni, Mark Hadley and junior Sam Sheronovich with a time of 8:34 in the 4x800 meter relay. In the 110-meter hurdles, the Spartans took all three places with junior Will Birchfield first (15.83), sophomore Jeff Bean second (16.4) and senior Allen Starkey third (16.53).
In the 100-meter dash, the Spartans again took all three scoring spots led by senior Devin Campbell in first (10.98), junior Nathan Jones second (11.01) and sophomore Brian Bodrick third (11.34). The 4x200 relay team of senior Darel Green, sophomore Ivan Adu-Poku, Bodrick and Jones was first in a time of 1:34.
“We certainly came out strong from the get-go. We were up 28-0 after only four events, that does not happen very often,” said Boardman head coach John Phillips.
In the 1600, Hadley took first (4:32), followed by freshman Juan Santiago in third (4:49). The Spartans won the 4x100 meter relay with the team of Jones, Campbell, Bodrick and sophomore Turel Thompson in a time of 43.73. Senior Dayne Hammond placed second in the 400 (52.91). In the 300-meter hurdles, the Spartans took all three scoring spots with Birchfield in first (43.74), senior Jordan Wolfe second (44.71) and Bean in third (46.4).
The 800 was won by Burns in 2:08, while Santiago was third at 2:11. The 200 was won by Green in 23.39 with sophomore Jarvis Cummings in second (24.34). Hadley won the 3200 in 9:44.
In the field events, the Spartans took all three scoring spots in the long jump with Starkey in first (20-7), Campbell second (19-7) and junior Matt Scott in third at (18-7). In the high jump, Starkey was first (6-0), while Bean was third (5-10).
In the discus, senior Brian Linsley was first with a throw of 150-0 and sophomore Mike Sferra was second (129-1). Linsley tied for third in the shot put at 40-4. In the pole vault, sophomore Steve Brown was second with a vault of 10-0.
