Boardman baseball sweeps Massillon Perry
The Boardman varsity baseball team swept a pair of Federal League games against Massillon Perry to remain undefeated in the league.
Troy Parks (5-0) pitched a complete game four-hitter with seven strikeouts to help Boardman to 6-2 victory. He was named Spartan Player of the Week for the second time this season.
In the second game against Perry, Dan Watkins tossed his second consecutive complete game as the Spartans completed the sweep, beating the Panthers 3-2. Watkins (3-0) also had Boardman’s only hit and RBI and also stole a base.
The Spartans scored in the sixth when Phil DiIanni scored on a pass ball with two outs after being walked to start the inning. In the seventh, Donny Kratofil, who was pinch running for Eddie Crump, scored on a two-out error.
Gridiron sponsors hosts spaghetti fundraiser
The Boardman Gridiron Club will host a spaghetti dinner fundraiser May 19 from noon to 6 p.m. to benefit the Boardman High School football team.
The dinner will be served at the Boardman United Methodist Church, 6809 Market St. and includes salad, pasta, bread and dessert.
The cost for the dinner will be $7 for adults, $5 for children 2-10 and kids under 2 eat free.

‘Boom Boom’ Mancini biography planned
A biography on Youngstown’s Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini called “The Good Son” is scheduled to be released in September. The book is written by Mark Kriegel, who also wrote bestselling biographies on “Pistol” Pete Maravich and Joe Namath. Mancini, who grew up on the South Side, was the WBA lightweight champion from 1982-84.
Penn State coaches caravan here May 15
Three Penn State head coaches will appear in the area to speak, as coordinated by the Nittany Lion Club and the Penn State Alumni Association.
Penn State football coach Bill O’Brien, women’s basketball coach Coquese Washington and men’s hockey coach Guy Gadowsky will appear on May 15 for a luncheon at the Boardman Holiday Inn.

Shurmur to address Regional Chamber
Cleveland Browns coach Pat Shurmur will headline a Regional Chamber executive luncheon on May 18 at the Maronite Center.
The event is titled “Football Friday with the Cleveland Browns.”
Shurmur will talk about plans for the 2012-2013 season and be available to field questions about the team, including his take on how the Browns did in the 2012 NFL Draft.
Current and alumni players will be on hand at the luncheon as well as the voice of the Browns, Jim Donovan.

Tressel speaker at United Way event
Jim Tressel will be the keynote speaker for the United Way’s 7th annual “Champions Among Us” dinner on May 17 at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center.
Joining the former YSU and Ohio State football coach will be Michael Zordich, former Cardinal Mooney and Penn State football player.
Zordich will be honored by the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley as the local champion who has represented the Valley in a positive manner.
