The registration deadline is Friday for a workshop on the signs of suicide, focusing on older adults, on May 11 from 8 a.m. to noon at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 343 Via Mount Carmel, Youngstown.

The speaker is Dr. Jules Rosen, chief of geriatric psychiatry services at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic.

The cost is $20 per person and includes breakfast. Checks can be made payable to Help Hotline Crisis Center, Inc., P.O. Box 46, Youngstown, OH 44501.

Two and one-half continuing education hours have been approved for social workers, counselors, registered nurses and licensed practical nurses.

Girl empowerment

Quitting smoking

New Castle, Pa.

Jameson Hospital, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Northwest Pennsylvania Tobacco Control Program, is offering a free six-session Quit Smoking Program onTuesday, May 14, 21, 23 and 30 from noon to 1 p.m. at Jameson Hospital South Campus, 1000 South Mercer St., New Castle, in Administrative Conference Room.

Couch to 5k seminar

Dr. Ted Suzelis is offering a free seminar, “Couch to 5K,” next Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at his Boardman office at 755 Boardman-Canfield Road, Suite D-3, in South Bridge West behind Second Sole.

Participants will be introduced to a training program that will start May 14th through the Ohio Naturopathic Wellness Center and will enable people of all fitness levels to finish a 5K race after training for 12 weeks. The only requirement for the program is that you are healthy enough to walk.

Child immunization

NILES

The Niles Health Department, 34 West State St., is offering a children’s immunization clinic on May 17 from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. No appointment is necessary, and no one will be refused for inability to pay.

Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and they should bring the child’s immunization records. Children should be feeling well with no illness, fever or rash.

Stop smoking class

Alliance

Alliance Community Hospital is offering “Fresh Start,” a free, three-week smoking cessation program on consecutive Thursdays from 6 to 7 p.m. starting May 17 and ending May 31.

The program, in Conference Room 3-A of the hospital, is open to the public. Smoking-cessation patches are not offered as part of the program.
