Campbell Police are investigating the theft of a check written to the city for a water bill.
They’re also investigating whether five more checks were stolen.
A Campbell resident wrote a check for $64 to the city and put it in the drop box outside the front doors of the city building the weekend of April 6, said city Finance Director Mike Evanson.
Evanson said that the resident questioned why she was served a shut-off notice when she’d paid her bill.
As it turned out, her check was cashed at PNC Bank, said Evanson. The city does not do business with that bank, he said. The city’s photo copy of the back of the cashed check is illegible.
The finance department reported the theft to the police department Tuesday.
Five other residents are saying they paid their water bills, but the city never received those checks, Evanson said. Those residents have no records of those checks being cashed anywhere, he said.
