Salem boys, United girls win county titles

EAST PALESTINE

Salem junior Anthony Shivers broke a meet record with a toss of 178 feet, 5 inches to win the discus and finished with field MVP honors to lead the Quakers to the boys team title at Tuesday’s Columbiana County track and field championships at Reid Stadium.

Shivers broke the previous mark of 171-7 set by Lisbon’s Dom DeFillipo in 2007. He also won the shot put and the Quakers piled up 167 points, easily besting United (96).

Lisbon’s Chad Bosel won running MVP after winning the 800- and 1600-meter runs and finishing third in the 3200.

East Palestine’s Jacob Dicello won the 100 and 200, while Salem’s Caleb Quinn won the 110 hurdles. The Quakers’ Scott Lodge 300 hurdles) and Zach Wukotich (high jump) won events, as did Crestview’s Jake Mellinger (400), Columbiana’s Britton Steiginga (long jump) and East Liverpool’s Nathaneal Boyer (3200).

On the girls side, United’s Allison Parks won the 800, finished second in the 1600 and was a member of the winning 4x400 and 4x800 relays to win running MVP and help the Eagles edge Salem 148-137.

Salem’s Ciera Trybend won the shot put and was third in the discus, sharing field MVP with East Palestine’s Chloe Snyder, who won the high jump and placed third in the long jump.

Other individual winners were Columbiana’s Shayla Ray (100 hurdles), Wellsville’s Shartece Taylor (100, long jump), United’s Emily Guappone (1600), Lisbon’s Bobbi Joe Evans (400), Beaver Local’s Sarah Ridgley (300 hurdles), Salem’s Marissa Swindell (200) and Mallory Maher (3200) and Columbiana’s Addie Dunlap (discus).

Lakeview’s Louie Novakovich (11 feet, 7 inches) and Abby Dunn (8-8) set meet records in the pole vault after the first day of the Trumbull County championships at Lakeview High School. Most finals are Thursday.

Maplewood’s boys and girls won the 4x800 relays, while Mineral Ridge’s Jacob Chiclowe (shot put) and Girard’s Nate Bucci (high jump) won Tuesday’s other boys finals. Newton Falls’ Shannon Montgomery (discus) and Badger’s Leah Blaney (long jump) won the girls finals.
