Free Ham Radio seminar planned at ITT

YOUNGSTOWN

Amateur Ham Radio has been a hobby for more than 100 years and is still very alive and well.

Hams provide support for a number of community activities and assist with communication in times of emergency. Prospective operators must attend classes or study independently to pass an exam granting them a technician’s license.

ITT Technical Institute, 1030 N. Meridian Road, will host Ham Radio 101, a free seminar for new Hams and students (and a refresher for others) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Preregistration is required and can be done by contacting Dave Brett at 330-270-1600 or by e-mail at DBrett@itt-tech.edu.

The seminar will be presented from a practical point of view by Wes Boyd, Frank Sole, Robert Webster and Brett, four Hams who have combined their collective experience, and is based on their recollections of their introduction to Ham Radio.

The agenda includes demonstrations and hands-on activities to give participants a real Ham radio experience. Topics will include: What Can I Do as a Ham; Frequencies and Bands; Language of Ham Radio; Ham Radio Operating Environment; Antennas and Antenna Cable; Very High Frequency (VHF) and High Frequency (HF) Equipment and Operation; and Building a Ham’s Station.
