Dobbins Elementary fourth-graders at were treated to a jam-packed hour of fun with health and nutrition on March 15. The students explored four stations during their healthy living event, moving between an exercise area, a healthy food bingo station, a quiz game and a discussion with a local nutritionist.

Cathy Fedor, who is school nurse at North Elementary and Dobbins, has worked this year to provide increased education about healthy choices to students.

“March is considered national Nutrition Month, so it’s especially timely to celebrate and learn about healthy choices. Research has found that kids who are active and eat healthy foods tend to do better in school. However, the first step is getting informed, which today is all about,” Fedor said.

Heather Kollar, a nutritionist at the Davis YMCA, hosted an informative discussion at the event about different kinds of food and what they do for growing bodies. Kollar displayed an array of vegetables, fruit, protein, dairy, and grains and explained how each helps keep a body healthy and strong.

Barb Dorbish, food service director for Poland, played a trivia game with the fourth-grade students at Dobbins during her visit.

Dorbish said Poland has an increased focus on health throughout the district.

“We host fun events like this at the elementary level, because these are lessons that may stay with the students as they grow. It’s all about keeping the kids informed of these positive changes happening here in Poland,” the director said.

The healthy fun didn’t stay contained to March 15, however. From March 19 to 23, Dobbins students will participate in P.A.C.K., or Pack Assorted Colors for Kids. A color will be assigned to each day of the week, like purple and blue Monday, and kids will be eating their way through the rainbow.

School lunches will provide food meeting the colorful challenge and students who pack their lunches are encouraged to participate with vibrant foods, as well as outfits that celebrate the day’s color.
