The lunches at Poland Schools March 19-23 spanned the colors of the rainbow.

The district celebrated P.A.C.K., or Pack Assorted Colors for Kids, by focusing on different colors for each day of the week.

Students were encouraged to try foods of different colors, whether they were offered in the school cafeteria or included in a packed lunch from home. All students were urged to wear the “color of the day” during the week, which were blue and purple on Monday, white, tan and brown on Tuesday, red for Wednesday, yellow and orange on Thursday, and green for Friday.

In the Dobbins cafeteria, colorful blueberry yogurt, red apples, carrots, oranges and kiwi were offered for students to try.

Student Alex Glaros, who packs his lunch, ate green apples and bananas for P.A.C.K. On March 23, he celebrated “green” day with a green shirt and sneakers.

Dobbins school nurse Cathy Fedor said the event is part of an increased focus on health in the Poland schools.

“We have a wellness policy in place, but we’re working on expanding that into programs, presentations and activities that the students can enjoy to learn about making better choices and getting active,” she said.

As a prize for getting involved, students Laurel Zarbaugh and Samantha Burnbrier won fruit baskets in a random drawing from all the Dobbins students who participated.

“I love apples. I’ll be eating those first,” Zarbaugh said.

Dobbins principal Cheryl Borovitcky said seeing colorful, healthy choices was encouraging during the week.

“It was wonderful to see students excited to show me cauliflower, tomatoes, pears, cucumbers and broccoli as their lunch choices. We hope that P.A.C.K. week has inspired students to continue to make healthy food choices each day,” she shared.
