Jazz fest features Dresel

The 12th annual Boardman High School Jazz Fest will be 7 p.m. Monday in the Boardman Performing Arts Center, 7777 Glenwood Ave. The event will feature BHS Jazz Ensembles 1, 2 and 3 and special guest drummer Bernie Dresel.
Dresel grew up in Sharon, Pa. His best-known work was with the Grammy- winning Brian Setzer Orchestra and Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band. He has also performed and recorded with Maynard Ferguson, Doc Severinson, Dolly Parton, James Taylor, James Brown, Frank Sinatra, Little Richard, B.B. King and Stevie Wonder.
The evening will begin with Jazz Ensemble 3 performing “Mood Indigo” and a vocal rendition of “Route 66.”
Jazz Ensemble 2 will then perform “Perdido,” “Time to Testify,” “Caravan” and “Birdland.” Dresel will play drums on one or two of these selections.
The headliner will be Jazz Ensemble 1, whose selections will include Duke Ellington’s “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing),” Frank Sinatra’s “Luck Be A Lady,” and Wayne Shorter’s “One By One.” Dresel will be featured on some Buddy Rich standards including “Groovin’ Hard,” “Big Mama Cass” and “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.”
