The city finally got bidders for a $487,347 road project in the old industrial area between Wilson Avenue and the Mahoning River.

Paving will begin May 1 on Casey Drive, an L-shaped access road around properties owned by Casey Corp., Sherman International and Monroe Steel.

Marucci and Gaffney Excavating in Youngstown was awarded the contract March 13. There were four other bidders.

It was the third time bids were sought for the paving project. Bids were solicited in August and September last year, but none was received.

City Administrator Jack Dill said the contractors indicated at the time that they were busy and didn’t think they could finish the paving by winter.

The project will make the brownfields more business-friendly. Dill said the road now has large pot holes, and there are close to 100 employees who use it.

There is also a 13-acre parcel of property within the L-shape that the city owns, and eight of the acres are suitable for building, Dill said.

The money for the project is coming from a state grant.
