Throughout the month of March, the students at West Boulevard Elementary are celebrating special people in their lives.

West’s Special Person Lunch, started by principal Al Cervello seven years ago, offered students in each grade the chance to bond with parents, relatives, and role models during a shared meal. The school’s third-graders invited their special people on March 15.

The honored guests met their West student at the cafeteria line, with many duos sharing big hugs. A meal of pasta, broccoli and dessert was served to the group.

As they ate, many guests had a chance to reflect on why their special person was so exemplary.

Mary McPheron had kind words for her granddaughter, Ciara Hancher, as well as her elementary school, during the event.

“Ciara is probably my last granddaughter until we move on to great-grandchildren, so I really try to enjoy every moment we have together. I love spending time with her here at school — she learns so much here and the teachers are really wonderful,” McPheron said.

Third-grader Hannah Hartman and her grandma, Elaine Kornak, shared their love for one another on March 15.

“She’s special because she helps me whenever I’m feeling sad,” Hartman said of Kornak.

“Hannah is my special person always — not just today,” Kornak shared.
