Hilltop Elementary School students enjoyed a trip to a luau during the school’s annual book fair. With the library decorated in a Hawaiian luau theme, the book fair was staged over three days with the students visiting the fair during their regularly scheduled library times.

Sue Henderson, Hilltop Elementary School and C.H. Campbell Elementary School librarian, organized the book fair, as she has for the past six years. Members of the school’s PTO operated the checkout during the fair and were also available to help the children pick out books. Parents and grandparents were also invited to the book fair to help the children shop.

The students visited the book fair the week before they were scheduled to shop so they could browse the shelves and create a wish list of books they wanted to purchase.

“Children are much more likely to read the books they get to choose themselves,” said Henderson.

A variety of books from all reading levels were available for the children to choose from, including chapter books, picture books, facts and stat books, reference books, cookbooks, best sellers and books about animals.

The book fair also offered adult best sellers for the parents and grandparents who attended the fair. Students could also purchase bookmarks, pencils, erasers, journals, pens, posters, crafty items and more.

The book fair is a fundraiser for the school, with 25 percent of the proceeds going to the school. Henderson uses those proceeds to buy books to stock the school’s library.

The students could also purchase gift certificates for their teacher, which then allowed the teacher to shop for books at the book fair to be used in the classroom.
