While perusing books or doing research at the Boardman library on March 8, library guests were also invited to enjoy the talents of students throughout the community in a pop-up art gallery.

The ninth annual “Celebrate the Arts!” art show featured media from Glenwood and Center Middle schools, Boardman High School and St. Charles School.

Students and teachers from each facility visited the library to see the work on display during the March 8 opening event. Art teachers from each school said the work presented at the library shows a cross-section of themes and projects explored in their classrooms.

“The pieces from the high school show how we have been focusing on architecture and the importance of buildings in the community, as well as studying color to stretch beyond using only black and white,” said Edie Davidson, teacher and art department leader at BHS.

“I’ve been pushing the students to explore mixed media art pieces, as well as, teaching them to observe with purpose for still-life projects,” said Lori Szoke, art teacher at Center Middle School.

The teachers said the show is interesting in that it shows young students still exploring subjects to older students who have found their muse and artistic voice.

“It’s exciting to see the talent so early in middle school. When those talents are tended to, Boardman gains great artists,” said Szoke.

“As a teacher of this subject for many years, seeing the students show creativity that surprises even us is a joy that never gets old,” added Davidson.
