The Columbiana County Board of Commissioners proclaimed the week of May 14 as American Cancer Society CPS3 Week. The Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS3) is being brought to Columbiana County through a partnership between the American Cancer Society, Salem Community Hospital, Crestview Local Schools and East Liverpool City Hospital.

St. Elizabeth awarded

YOUNGSTOWN

St. Elizabeth Health Center has received a silver Healthy Hospital Award from Stryker Sustainability Solutions for “outstanding performance in reducing environmental harm and improving overall hospital quality through medical-device remanufacturing and reprocessing” in 2011.

Through its medical device remanufacturing and reprocessing practices, St. Elizabeth saved $175,055 last year and prevented 9,788 pounds of materials from entering the waste stream.

In 2010, Humility of Mary Health Partners received a silver Healthy Hospital Award from Ascent, a Stryker Sustainability Solution, that recognized HMHP’s three health centers, St. Elizabeth Health Center, St. Joseph Health Center in Warren and St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center, for collectively saving $176,647 and preventing 12,005 pounds of waste as a result of remanufacturing and reprocessing medical devices.

Free hearing screening

The Centers for Hearing Care is joining the Better Hearing Institute to raise awareness of the connection between diabetes and hearing loss and is urging all Americans to take the “http://www.diabetes.org/diabetes-basics/prevention/diabetes-risk-test on American Diabetes Association Alert Day Æ. This year, American Diabetes Association Alert Day Æ is on March 27.

Also, from March 27-30, the Centers for Hearing Care local offices are offering free hearing screenings where people in the Mahoning Valley by appointment only. Nonprofit agencies receive grants

YOUNGSTOWN

Two Youngstown nonprofit agencies received part of the $211,939 in housing counseling grants awarded to Ohio by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The federal agency awarded $29 million to national, regional and multistate counseling agencies that may also have an impact in Ohio communities.

Compass Family & Community Services and the Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority are to receive $15,967 and $15,000, respectively.

The HUD-approved counseling agencies funding supports are crucial in helping struggling families on a one-to-one basis to manage their money, navigate the home-buying process, and secure their financial futures, said HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan.

Free diabetes risk test

SHARON, PA.

Sharon Regional Health System’s Diabetes Center is offering free diabetes risk tests in recognition of the American Diabetes Association National Alert Day on March 27, 2012. The Alert Day is a one-day “wake-up call” asking the American public to take the Diabetes Risk Test to find out if they are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

The test asks users to answer simple questions about weight, age, family history and other potential risks for pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes. Preventative tips are provided, including encouraging those at high risk to talk with their health-care provider.

The Diabetes Risk Test, available year-round, is available free of charge by calling 724-981-6551.

Food-bank campaign

Youngstown

Through April 7, customers can help provide food to their friends and neighbors by tearing off a $1, $5 or $10 coupon at the cash register at any Northeast Ohio Giant Eagle location, and adding the donation to their grocery bill. Also, nonperishable food items may be placed in a bin at the front of the stores.

The money and food collected go to the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley’s monthlong Harvest for Hunger campaign.
