Pa. officer foils bank robbery, shoots suspect

WYOMISSING, Pa. (AP) — Police in eastern Pennsylvania say a plain-clothes officer who happened to be at a bank ended up foiling an attempted robbery and shooting the suspect.

According to police, the suspect was wearing a fake explosive device when he threatened tellers at the M&T bank in Wyomissing today.

Among the customers was an on-duty Wyomissing police investigator wearing plain clothes.

Police Chief Jeffrey Biehl says the officer overheard the threat, identified himself and tried to take the man into custody.

Biehl says the suspect then threatened to blow up the bank and tried to escape, but was shot.

Biehl says the man is recovering from surgery. He declined to release the suspect’s name, pending notification of family.
