Youngstown officer treated after assault
YOUNGSTOWN
A city police officer was assaulted and landed in the hospital for the second time in two years after a fight in a South Side bar.
Officer Bridget Quinn was taken to ValleyCare Northside Medical Center after complaining of dizziness when she was punched in the face by a drunken patron at O’Malley’s Bar on South Avenue. She was treated Thursday night but will not return to work immediately.
Officer Patrick Mulligan was also taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries suffered in the bar scuffle.
Shawn Green, who would not give police any identification at the time of the incident, has been charged with felonious assault on a police officer, assault on a police officer, assault, possession of marijuana and possession of drugs. Police said he had an extremely high blood- alcohol level and drugs in his system at the time of the incident.
Green was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment and remained in the hospital as of Friday night. He will be arraigned in Youngstown Municipal Court upon his release.
According to reports, Quinn and Mulligan responded to a call for help concerning a fight with weapons at the bar about 8 p.m. Thursday. When the officers arrived, Quinn approached Green but was punched in the face as she reached him. The officer’s head jerked backward and hit a wall.
Green reportedly then began fighting with Mulligan, and both men landed on the floor struggling. Mulligan said it was believed at the time that Green had a gun.
Quinn used a stun gun on Green to stop the fight, and other officers responded to the bar to assist.
Police found the drugs on Green while searching him before his arrest.
Quinn injured her back in March 2011 when she was assaulted while breaking up a fight between a group of women on the South Side.
Quinn said she arrived at the location to find several women standing outside of two cars engaged in a verbal altercation.
Multiple women at the scene began to fight with the officer, but a 21-year-old woman, Briyanna Littlejohn, deemed the primary aggressor, was sentenced to a year in prison.
Jenicia Abrams, 19, of Parkwood Avenue, another woman involved in the fight, received 18 months’ probation. Cases are pending against the four other women.
