Blade Kemats, a seventh-grader, has qualified to represent Salem Junior High School, at the state level of the National Geographic Bee, sponsored by Google and Plum Creek.

The state Bee will take place March 30 at Ohio State University Mansfield Campus.

Students in grades four through eight compete in this bee.

One winner from each state and territory will advance to the national competition, which will be May 22-24 at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C.

St. Rose registration

GIRARD

St. Rose School, 61 E. Main St., is accepting registration for kindergarten through eighth grade for the 2012-13 school year.

A $50 registration fee is required. Call the school office at 330-545-1163 to secure registration materials or to schedule a tour.

Students entering grades one to eight can set up a shadow day, a day when they can come and spend a day with the class they would be entering.

The school is an Ohio Education Choice scholarship (voucher) participating school. It offers busing from Girard, McDonald and Liberty.

Before- and after-school care is available through Sunny Days Day Care and Pre-School in the St. Rose building.

Host families wanted

World Heritage Student Exchange program, a public benefit organization, is seeking local host families for high school boys and girls from Spain, Germany, Thailand, Norway, China, Russia, France, the former Soviet Union countries, Denmark, Italy and Sweden.

Host families are asked to include the student as a member of their family. Couples, single parents and families with or without children in the home are encouraged to host. Families can choose a student for a semester or for the school year.

Each World Heritage student is fully insured, brings his or her own personal spending money and expects to contribute to his/her share of household responsibilities, as well as being included in normal family activities and lifestyles.

Ursuline plans event

Ursuline High School will host Fifth and Sixth Grade Education Day from 9:15 a.m. until 1:45 p.m. on Friday. This enrichment day will allow students to participate in special sessions planned by the Ursuline High School faculty and coaches.

The sessions relate to high school courses, programs and sports. Students will attend three sessions of their choosing, a one-act play and a pep rally and have lunch in the cafeteria.

Fifth and Sixth Grade Education Day is open to any student. To register, call Ursuline High School at 330-744-4563, ext. 111.

Scholarships available

Howland High School seniors have the opportunity to apply for 45 community scholarships due in part to the overwhelming generosity of the local community.

Howland Community Scholarship Foundation committee chairman Andy Bednar remarks, “in spite of what some might see as a tight economy locally, the Howland Community Scholarships Foundation has continued as the recipient of our community’s generosity.”

Seniors can access the full scholarship application at www.howlandschools.com, and selecting the Howland Community Scholarships icon.

The scholarship application deadline is Tuesday.
