If you’d like to read a book, clap your hands,
If you’d like to read a book, clap your hands,
If you’d like to read a book, listen up and take a look,
If you’d like to read a book, clap your hands.
This song, set to the tune of “If You’re Happy and You Know It,” was how Children’s Librarian Nikki Puhalla began the Fun Time for 4’s and 5’s story time at the Canfield library Feb. 28.
Sticking with the story time’s theme of yummy food, Puhalla then read the book “Soup Day,” and when she was finished, the children in attendance got to make a big pot of their own vegetable ‘soup.’
Puhalla pulled out a giant stock pot and asked each child to pick three plastic vegetables she brought with her. As they sang the song “Vegetable Soup” to the tune of “Farmer in the Dell,” the children took turns adding their veggies to the pot and stirring the ‘soup.’
Puhalla then read the children “The Cake That Mack Ate” and “Little Pea.” She then read a rhyme called “Five Little Ice Cream Cones,” and used felt ice cream cones on a felt board to illustrate the rhyme.
To get the children moving, Puhalla played the song “Ice Cream” by Asheba and gave the children little maracas to shake to the music while they moved around the room.
The next book seemed to be a favorite of the children because it was about one of their favorite foods — pizza. “Pizza at Sally’s” was followed by the song “P-I-Z-Z-A,” to the tune of “B-I-N-G-O.” During the song, the children posted pictures of pizza toppings on a white board with the word pizza at the top, so they could follow along with the song.
To end the Fun Time for 4’s and 5’s story time, Puhalla told the children they were going to make their own pizzas out of paper plates and construction paper. She provided the children with red crayons for the sauce and cut out cheese, black olives, mushrooms, pepperoni and peppers and told them could create their favorite pizza and take it home and enjoy.
