Youngstown native gets Carnegie honor

A Youngstown native, Pierina Morelli, recently received a Carnegie Science Award Honorable Mention in the science communicator category.

Morelli, a WQED videojournalist, gives 10-to-30 minute reports on scientific, environmental and technological issues by focusing on the human element of each story.

The journalist, who grew up in Boardman, graduated from Villa Maria High School and from Ohio University. She worked as a sports photographer for The Vindicator in 1977-78. She later worked for The Niles Times and after that for WKBN-TV. She began working for WQED in 1999.

Morelli has won many prestigious journalism awards, including numerous Emmy awards and an Edward R. Murrow award.
