Donation to Rayen

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown Foundation is donating $30,000 to the Rayen Stadium Renovation Fund.

The $3 million project plan is to renovate the dilapidated Rayen Stadium for it to be ready for the upcoming football season. The cost is estimated at $3 million and includes synthetic turf, lighting, locker rooms, concession area, public bathrooms, press box, storage and parking area and updated seating to accommodate 7,000 fans. The city school board designated for the project $1 million from money generated through the sale of bonds as part of the Ohio School Facilities Commission project to rebuild school buildings.

Board seeks cuts

Youngstown

The city school board is asking its superintendent to look into where potential cuts can be made within the district. Lock P. Beachum Sr., board president, said board members discussed at Tuesday’s regular meeting what to do about a loss of about $4 million in the budget for this fiscal year.

The district learned in February that because of a loss of more than 500 students as determined by the state’s official October enrollment count, it would receive about $4 million less from the state than it expected. “We’ve asked the superintendent [Connie Hathorn] to come up with some recommendations no later than April 30,” Beachum told The Vindicator on Tuesday. “Something has to be given to the board within a couple of weeks.”
