Youngstown school board experiencing $4M budget shortfall

YOUNGSTOWN — The city school board is asking its superintendent to look into where potential cuts can be made within the district.

Lock P. Beachum Sr., school board president, said the board discussed at today’s regular meeting what to do about a loss of about $4 million in the budget for this fiscal year.

The district learned in February that because of a loss of more than 500 students as determined by the state’s official October enrollment count, it would receive about $4 million less from the state than it expected.

“We’ve asked the superintendent [Connie Hathorn] to come up with some recommendations no later than April 30,” Beachum told The Vindicator on Tuesday. “Something has to be given to the board within a couple of weeks.”
