Springsteen brings energy to NYC show
NEW YORK
The power and the glory were unleashed in the heart of Harlem on Friday night as Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band took to the stage of the storied Apollo Theater.
Springsteen, self-introduced in a deadpan delivery as “the hardest-working white man in show business,” was intent on proving it with music and physical antics that whipped the packed house into a frenzy.
In a nod to Apollo legend James Brown, the “hardest-working man in show business,” Springsteen milked his own Godfather of Soul shtick, staggering dramatically around the stage wearing a black towel “cape” that was ceremoniously draped onto his shoulders by guitarist Steven Van Zandt.
The show aired live on SiriusXM Radio’s E Street Channel as part of the satellite company’s 10th- anniversary celebration. It was a prelude to a world tour that launches next Sunday in Atlanta in support of the “Wrecking Ball” album, whose liner notes include a touching homage to saxophonist Clarence Clemons, who died in June.
Oprah, Jaycee Dugard feted at DVF Awards
NEW YORK
Oprah Winfrey was embraced in a hug by longtime friend Diane von Furstenberg as she took to the stage to accept a “Lifetime Leadership” honor at the third annual DVF awards.
Upon accepting the award, Winfrey was expected to talk about her career, but instead used the majority of her time to praise another honoree, Jaycee Dugard, who was abducted when she was 11 years old and held in captivity for 18 years by Phillip and Nancy Garrido. She was raped and gave birth to two children before she eventually was rescued. Her captors were convicted.
“Jaycee Dugard, I am so proud of you, your courage, your ability to press onward toward the future and toward a more victorious life for yourself and for using your courage your strength and your power to show the world that you care,” Winfrey said.
After Winfrey’s introduction, Dugard took to the stage, getting emotional as she thanked her mother for never giving up hope of finding her. She also spoke about her JAYC Foundation, which aims to give support to families dealing with abduction and other tragedies.
