Official two-day GED testing sponsored by Choffin Career and Technical, Adult Education Department, University System of Ohio, will be at 8:45 a.m. March 20 and 21 at Choffin. Participants must be pre-registered and bring a photo ID. To pre-register or to enroll in free classes, call 330-744-8715.
Citizenship classes

The English Center and Youngstown City Schools’ Adult Basic and Literacy Education program will offer free U.S. citizenship-preparation classes. These will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays from March 20 through May 22 at Choffin Career and Technical Center, 200 E. Wood St. Classes will be in the ABLE suite, classroom 2. The city school district will accept open-enrollment applications for the 2012-13 school year for students entering kindergarten through seventh grades and for ninth grade. Applications will be available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through May 1 in the superintendent’s office at 704 E. Prospect St.

Registration will be at CCW Academy’s 37th annual open house from 9 a.m. to noon March 31. Preschoolers between age 21/2 and 5 are eligible to enroll and can be registered that day. Liberty Schools are taking applications for open enrollment for the 2012-13 school year. A limited number of students will be accepted. Applications aren’t being accepted for 11th and 12th grades. Applications may be picked up at the board of education office, 4115 Shady Road, by custodial parents or guardians from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday through March 23. All applications must be completed and returned in person by the custodial parent/guardian to the board office by 3 p.m. March 23. Mailed applications will not be accepted, and no student information will be taken over the phone. An application must be completed for each student.

Youngstown State University: Rookery Radio, the student-run Internet radio station at YSU, will host the first Rookery Radio Benefit Bash on March 24, at the Lemon Grove in downtown Youngstown. The event will feature a silent auction (including Cleveland Indians tickets and concert tickets). Rookery T-shirts will be available for sale. There is a $5 cover charge, with all proceeds benefiting Rookery Radio. Local bands Tweek Tronic, Neon Avenue, Words First and Jake Simmons and the Little Ghosts will perform, as will comedians and Rookery Radio student DJs, Jesse Huber, Jay Mills and Eric Lewis. YSU’s Bachelor of Social Work Student Social Work Association has created a cookbook with recipes from students, faculty, staff and others to raise money for local community needs. The cookbooks will be sold for $10 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 23, in the Chestnut Room in Kilcawley Center.
