Poland farmers market location OK’d
POLAND
The Poland Library and surrounding area has become a place where residents can not only read books but watch outdoor movies and have lunch at a local deli.
Soon, they’ll be able to get fresh produce there, too.
Village officials signed off on a permit last week allowing Town One Streetscapes to set up a farmers market on the patio under the U.S. Route 224 bridge, where Yellow Creek Theater screens films. Patrons can park in the library’s lot.
“We want to help the farmers in the area. We think people are more conscious of eating fresh foods and the farm-to-table type rather than going somewhere and buying produce that was grown in another area or country,” said Barbara Delisio of Streetscapes, who is helping to organize the market.
The market will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday beginning July 7 and ending Oct. 6. Streetscapes is taking applications for vendors, and organizers hope to have at least a dozen vendors each Saturday.
The vendors should grow what they sell or be “value-added” producers, such as vendors who make cheese, jams or baked goods, for example, Delisio said.
The vendor registration cost is $15 per market day or $168 for the entire season. Applications are available by calling Delisio at 330-707-1866 or Marcy Black at 330-651-6158.
“We want to support our local food economy and create an enjoyable community experience,” Delisio said.
Streetscapes President Larry Warren said the farmers market goes along with the organization’s mission.
“Our mission is to make the community a better place by using and enhancing public areas as best we can,” he said.
Warren said the library is supportive of the project and will benefit from the market, too.
“We thought it would be a good place to have it, and people can go from the library to the market and vice versa,” he said.
