Team Canfield wins junior high state dual title
Neighbors | Submitted.The Canfield team won the state wrestling duals title Feb. 26 in Columbus. The team consisted of wrestling from Canfield, Boardman and Poland.
Team Canfield won the Ohio Athletic Committee (OAC) Junior High Dual State wrestling championship Feb. 26 in Columbus, competing in the White Division against five other teams from Ohio.
Canfield went 5-0 and outscored its opponents 334-142. The first three wins were over Louisville (64-30), Avon (67-30) and Logan (74-30).
In the fourth round, Canfield faced undefeated Norwalk Convoy and jumped out to an 8-0 lead with wins from Sean Frisbie and Andy Garr. Convoy fought back to take a 13-8 lead, before wins by David Crawford and Georgio Poullas gave the Cards a 17-13 advantage.
After victories by Mario Graziani and CJ Frost, Canfield trailed 28-26. That’s when Canfield’s tough upperweights took over. David Labra, Anthony Audi and Jacob Esarco earned earned wins by pin to secure the 50-34 win and berth in the finals.
In the final round, Canfield trounced Licking Heights, 79-15.
Several wrestlers went undefeated on the day. Going 5-0 were Sean Frisbie, Georgio Poullas, CJ Frost, David Labra, Jaret Bunch and Jacob Esarco. Poullas and Esarco had five pins and Labra and Frost had four pins. Going 3-0 were David Crawford, Braxton Madison, Mario Graziani and Anthony Audi.
Going 4-1 were Andy Garr and Nathan Buttle. Others contributing to the state title were Tanor English, Kyle West, Anthony Joseph, Tom Donadee, Isaiah McInnis, Ryan Murphy, Michael Rubesich, Matt Orr and David Hofsess.
